Viper - Raymond Thorp

THE TRUE AND TERRIFYING STORY OF A DRUG ADDICT

WDL BOOKS T.S.891
FIRST PRINTING 1960
LONDON, UK
FIRST PUBLISHED IN HARDBACK BY ROBERT HALE 1956

The Confessions of a Drug Addict

For the first time in this country since de Quincey, a drug addict has written his astounding confessions; a documentary that horrifies yet compels the reader to walk with Thorp into the half-light of London's drug world.

The author, a young clerk from suburbia, haunts the jazz clubs of Soho and finally begins to smoke Indian hemp - or marijuana. It is the first step on the road to prison and to a living death. Soon he is a "pusher" - agent for a drug ring selling hemp and heroin. He tells how London's two big dealers obtain their supplies, how they are distributed and where they are sold. Thorp holds nothing back. He writes of clubs and cafes where addicts gathered until Scotland Yard's vice squad, by raiding them, split up the gatherings. At one time he is living in a luxury flat, bought from the proceeds of illegal sales, but slowly he begins to slide to degradation.

Publishing Year: 2023
Cover Artist: Samson Pollen

Young Women Driven To Crime To Satisfy Their Wanton Desires!

Whether they were called Juvenile Delinquents (or JDs), Gun Molls, Prison Brides, Motorcycle Mamas, or Hot Rod Honeys, they were all “Gang Girls” and the tough-as-nails subject of this issue of MEN’S ADVENTURE QUARTERLY.

In post World War II America, teens were pushing the boundaries of what was considered acceptable behavior, and causing major concern amongst parents and the government. The Kefauver Commission in Congress held hearings to discover the root causes of juvenile delinquency, but this “problem” wasn’t only in America, as Teens around the globe pushed their boundaries. Of course, the men’s adventure magazines, paperbacks, and B-movies all saw yet another genre of crime, violence and sex to exploit for their hungry audiences. MEN’S ADVENTURE QUARTERLY takes on the Gang Girl genre in all its forms giving you a peek at the evolution of female outlaws in a variety of media who live beyond the polite boundaries of society. Joining us in this expose’ of female crime are retromedia expert Jules Burt, and pulp culture author Andrew Nette both of whom provide a comprehensive perspective on Gang Girls from the UK and the AU.

Get ready to enjoy the best in Gang Girl stories and articles ripped from the headlines and the pages of men’s adventure magazines.

From the vengeance beating with bicycle chains of a rival gang. . .to the degraded sharing of sweet virginal Carol with the rest of his gang. And finally to the fateful family feud with his own father over Charlotte - his father's prostitute mistress - who first taught Silkie her own kind of Jailbait Street love, then hired him to dig up new "business" for her.

THE TICKET THAT EXPLODED

utilises William Burroughs's now famous fold-in-method to give a fragmented and many-sided vision of modern reality. The result is at once an original work of fiction, an intensely poetical novel and a political and morale fable. the author's preoccupation is with the plethora of forces in the world that attempt to excercise 'conrol', and his fantastic imagination once again weaves extraordinary images and ideas into a world that is both personal and universal.

The authoR of THE NAKED LUNCH and THE SOFT MACHINE has now written a book that will take its place among the classics of our time.

THE SOFT MACHINE

is the immediate successor to 'The Naked Lunch', a book which has, in a short time, established itself as one of the key works of post-war literature.

The author's principal preoccupations are still the juxtaposition of good and evil, human passion and sensuality and the power of the machine, the struggle of conflicting forces to control human environment; and with the awareness that nightmares have their counterparts in real life.

This is not a book for the casual reader; nor is it for the squeamish. the serious reader, however, will find a technical mastery, a courage with experimentation and a scientific eye for the new literary research that is unparalleled in modern writing.

THE NAKED LUNCH

"EXTRAORDINARY AND DEVASTATING,
FUNNY AND TERRIBLE,
HORRIBLE AND HAUNTING.

Like Genet turned into a Marx Brothers script, this is the real journey to the end of the night, a Big Dipper ride through the black underworld of the human soul.
To read it, it's like Ulysses put through a speeded-up projector onto a distorted cinema screen. It is a gruesome, tormented and a chillingly pessimistic view of the universe. But that is where Burroughs dwelt during the time of his addiction."
Kenneth Allsop - Daily Mail

"Mr. Burroughs joins a small body of writers who are willing to look at hell and report what they see.
I can think of only one other writer with whom he can be compared: Jonathan Swift. It demands to be read."
Anthony Burgess - The Guardian

"A furious apocalypse, splendid and exasperating."

"THIS BOOK IS EMPHATICALLY
A READING 'MUST' FOR YOUNG PEOPLE. . ."

Edwin J. Lucas, Executive Director,
SOCIETY FOR THE PREVENTION OF CRIME (NEW YORK)

This book is emphatically a reading "must" for young people as well as for the sociologist interested in the phenomena of gang warfare and neighborhood tensions. The saga of a conflict gang, told so powerfully in THE AMBOY DUKES, is really twice told: once, within the covers of this book: and again, in every city and town of the U.S.A. Rarely has a writer captured so faithfully and recorded so excitingly the poignant drama that is being daily unfolded for hundreds of thousands of our young people in the teeming pathways we call "streets."

Within the compass of every city street are found eloquent evidence of all society's strengths and weaknesses - from the towering air-conditioned edifices of industry to the filthy dwelling places provided for man to lay his weary body at day's end; from youth's craving for understanding, sympathy and affection, to the community's indifference to those needs. The street bears the tokens of all our ambitions, hopes and capacity to love and be loved. But there are also the scars of our fears, hates, envy, thirst for revenge, and the deep, tortured feelings of guilt which arise our of long forgotten as well as remembered episodes.

When and how can we bring these forces under control? It will, or should be, clear to the readers of THE AMBOY DUKES that they have it within their power to strike a telling blow against the continuance of the conditions - economic, social and psychological - which breed and foster crime.

What does it mean to be "Beat?"

What effect have the "Beats" had on the American Way of Life?
What are their beliefs regarding sex, jazz, the use of drugs? Is the "Beat Generation" a passing fad or a deep-seated revolt? These and many other questions are answered in this book, which uses conversations, personal interviews, and tape recordings to delve beneath the surface and show the real world of the "Beats."

"The Holy Barbarians is replete with the frank autobiographical reminisces of a group of young Americans of extremely varied backgrounds, who hold in common only a complete rejection of the values of bourgeois society. . . .
No One is going to be able to assess the depth and breadth of this rebellion without referring to Lipton's humane and sensitive book."

All The Way Down - Vincent Riccio and Bill Slocum

THE VIOLENT UNDERWORLD OF STREET GANGS

Publisher: Ballantine Books
Number: F 712
Publishing Year: 1962
Printing: First
Cover Price: 50c
Cover Artist:

ALL THE WAY DOWN

is the story of five years spent in the vicious, appalling underworld of the juvenile street gangs. Vincent Riccio, ex-boxer with an M.A. degree from Columbia, was a street worker with the New York City Youth Board. The life he describes makes "West Side Story" sound like a kindergarten fairy tale.

This is the brutal, unadorned truth about a world where rival gangs fight "wars" with tire-chains, knives and guns; where the teen-age date is replaced by mass rape in the back seat of a stolen car; where murder is a status symbol and kids of 14 are hopelessly hooked on dope.

"Juvenile delinquency is going to be unbeatable in ten years," the Attorney General of the United States said recently. Vincent Riccio writes bitterly: "I hope it's not unbeatable now."

Blood on My Shoulder

by

A. J. MERAK

Johnny Merak was determined to get Maxie Temple, who'd framed him for a three-year-stretch in San Quentin. But the Big Men of the Los Angeles Underworld wanted both Temple and Johnny Merak and decided that by killing Temple they could do both with the same shot.

But Merak wasn't having any of the deal and when Dawn Grahame showed up, he was more than ready to take on the whole of the Organisation. Bit first he had to meet the suspects. the unknown hoodlum who knew too much. Madden who might have been the killer and his girl-friend who had to be fed with heroin to keep her from talking to the wrong people.

Finally there were Clancy Snow and Dutch McKnight, the bosses of the Underworld who sat like black spiders in the web of treachery and vice that made up the Dark Side of Los Angeles.

And at the end of the play, when the chips were down and all the cards on the table. Death stepped in to reap the winnings.

You have just come to New York City looking for a home, a job, and (yes, Miguel would soon admit this to himself) love.

But in El Barrio, the heart of this city, you find only corruption: prostitutes for neighbors, hoodlums for the children to play with. In El Barrio you live with fear by day and violence by night.

This is the background for the book that shocked New Yorkers, and readers across the nation, when it became the fiction "sleeper" of the year. This is story behind New York City's explosive headlines.

BANNED

Rox Minton's controversial television play SCUM was commissioned by the BBC, filmed, advertised, then suddenly withdrawn a short time before it was due to be screened.

The decision to veto caused violent reactions - from those who supported the censorship as well as those who felt outraged by the Establishment's ban.

Now Roy Minton has re-written the plays as a novel: and, for the first time, the public has the chance to make up its own mind.

It is an uncompromising, often shocking and outspoken comment on the bleak, brutal world of a Borstal: a powerful story that tells the truth about the boys labelled 'Scum' - and the men they call 'Screws'!

A Major film of SCUM is planned for the near future.
