WEST GERMANY 1955

Directed by Richard Brooks
Based on the novel by Evan Hunter
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer

Blackboard Jungle was originally rejected in the UK for containing "unbridled, revolting hooliganism" and having a "damaging and harmful effect on teenagers". It was eventually released as an X certificate after around 5 minutes of footage was removed. When shown at a South London Cinema in Elephant and Castle in 1956 the teenage Teddy Boy audience began to riot, tearing up seats and dancing in the aisles. After that, riots took place around the country wherever the film was shown.

SEX-and-SADISM by teen-agers!

MURDER-and-MAYHEM by mere children!

You read about it every day in your newspaper but . . .

WHY did a pretty Texas teen-ager kill her brother "just for kicks?"

WHY did a boy say calmly, "I don't know why I killed him; I didn't even know him?

WHY did a seventeen-year old say, "I wanted to see how it felt for a knife to dig into bone?"

WHY did a clean-cut youngster stomp a total stranger to death because he didn't like the tune the man was humming?

Jess Stearn, top New York newspaperman, goes behind the scenes to search for the "why" in this carefully documented study of what happens before and after the headlines.

Light The Dark Streets - C. Kilmer Myers

DOLPHIN BOOKS C193
NEW YORK, USA
1ST PRINTING 1961
ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED BY THE SEABURY PRESS 1957
COVER DESIGN BY GEORGE GIUSTI
COVER PHOTOGRAPH COURTESY OF LOOK MAGAZINE

"Light the Dark Streets is written by the [Episcopalian] Vicar of St. Augustine's Chapel, on Henry Street in the heart of New York's Lower East Side. The story Father Myers tells often is not a pleasant one, but it is a compelling one nevertheless. It is the story of a great love of mankind bringing light to an area filled with the darkness of human misery of every kind. It is, of necessity, a personal story, for he has lived and worked closely with those he and his associates are trying to help.

"Henry Street is a slum area, overcrowded, poverty-ridden, and a breeding ground for tensions of all kinds. Yet it is home for nearly a quarter of a million people of all colors, races, and creeds - among them a gang of Negro boys who called themselves the Knights.

"Father Myers tells the individual stories of some of the members of the gang, what they felt, what influences were turning them into lawless rebels, what was done to try to help them, and the measure of success or failure. Among the problems that had to be combated were racial prejudice, sex, dope, poverty, broken homes, fear, and loneliness. He also tells the story of the gang as a unit, what brought it into existence, and the forces which motivated its actions."

THE JUNGLE

In this shockingly authentic novel, warren Miller has caught the strangeness and wildness of the hopped-up, frenzied world of teenage street gangs. He lets Duke, War Lord of the Crocodiles, tell in his own words how they talk, think, live: what makes them fight . . . what makes them kill.

"When I come walking down the street people say 'Here come Duke. He cool. He got heart.' When they see me strut they know a rumble is on. I swinging with the gang tonight."

"Compared with Duke's 'cool world,' Studs Lonigan's Chicago or Tom Joad's Oklahoma are playgrounds for clergymen's children . . ."

The Temple Of Gold - William Goldman

A stunning novel of a lost generation - angry, rootless, defiant young men and women in a frantic search for fulfilment.

CORGI BOOKS GN969
LONDON, UK
1ST PRINTING 1961
ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED IN HARDBACK BY KNOPF, USA 1957

William Goldman's THE TEMPLE OF GOLD

An angry library trustee wrote to the publishers that THE TEMPLE OF GOLD is a "blue-print for juvenile delinquency", and should be denied space on library shelves. We think he missed the point.

Actually, this enormously exciting, passionate, violent and touching book - - though it admittedly talks about sex with no holds barred, and is packed with scenes that shock and even horrify - - became an overnight, surprise bestseller because it is the truth - - the truth about the most controversial generation, told by one of them.

THE TEMPLE OF GOLD is a whale of a book. It can make you laugh. It can break your heart. It may make you shudder. You may not have the guts to like it. But you'd better read it.

THE AMBOY DUKES

Over two million copies of this novel have been sold in the United States. Of the novel, this has been said, "The Amboy Dukes represent a small minority among boy gangs, but because of over-crowded schools and tired teachers, racial and religious tensions, that small minority is becoming alarmingly less small. That is why Mr. Shulman's book is important and timely." With its slashing realism it is one of the best novels on juvenile delinquency ever written.
